First Look: Springfield Armory LevAR Charging Handle

by Braxton Taylor

Springfield Armory has rolled out a new dual-purpose AR-15 pattern charging handle for the AR-pattern modern sporting rifle market with the new LevAR charging handle. The Springfield Armory LevAR charging handle does the same job as a standard AR-15 charging handle, with the addition of its built-in extended lever that folds out when extra force is needed to cycle the action and extract a fired or stuck case from a rifle’s chamber. The traditional AR-15 charging handle does not provide enough surface area to grasp adequately when an AR-15 pattern firearm experiences a stuck casing. Traditionally the remedy to extract stuck cases has been to orient the firearm vertically (muzzle side up) by slamming its butt stock against a hard surface like concrete to let the inertia pull the stuck case out. The problem with this method is that it can be very rough on the firearm, especially the stock and receiver extension.

The Springfield Armory LevAR charging handle extended latch folds over and around the rear of the unit to stay out of the way during normal use. There is no special installation required as it is a drop in part and fits inside any AR-15 pattern upper receiver the same way as any other standard charging handle. The extended lever is held in place via a locking button and the end user to deploy, which must be depressed first in order to release the lever.
