First Look: THROOM Dueling Tree

by Braxton Taylor

Throom Targets has just released a new dueling tree that uses proprietary “self healing” targets. Throom’s new dueling tree has an array of six, 6-inch round targets that attach to pivoting mounting brackets which secure the targets to a wooden 2×4-foot plank (provided by the user). Throom also includes a target stand base (the Throom Targets Alpha Stand Bracket), along with setup hardware and a graded ball level to provide assistance when building the target. The user just provides the 2×4 dimensional lumber for the stand itself and for both of the “legs” of the Alpha Stand Bracket.

The bullet-striking surfaces of a Throom target mimics the reaction of a falling steel targets such as round plates, squares, poppers and other targets, but without risks inherent to shooting at steel surfaces. Some of these risks include things like ricochets, bullet or jacket fragments that can fly around after striking the steel target which can injure shooters or other spectators. This is why there is a minimum distance for engaging a steel target with a pistol. However, when it comes to  Throom Targets, the target surfaces greatly reduce these risks by having projectiles pass through the target itself. The material then “self heals’ as each bullet hole impact closes up to a mere pinhole. Throom targets are safe to use with most standard rimfire and centerfire pistol cartridges such as .22LR, 9mm, .38 Spl., .380 ACP, .40 S&W and .45 ACP. For best results, Throom recommends using projectiles with a muzzle velocity of 750 thru 1250 feet per second and with FMJ (full metal jacket) or round-nose ammunition. JHP (hjacketed hollow point) ammunition runs the risk of leaving wider cookie cutter marks on target surfaces, reducing the life of your target array.

MSRP for the Throom Dueling Tree kit is $399 without lumber, and for more information on this item or other products from Throom, please visit
